General Dentistry

The key to a healthy smile is in routine care and preventative dentistry that addresses issues before they damage your smile. General dentistry focuses on routine visits and preventative care that help you maintain your oral health, no matter your age.

If you haven’t seen the dentist in the past 6 months, call Precision Dental Group in Hillsborough for a comfortable cleaning and exam.

Precise and Comprehensive Care

When you come to visit us, we aren’t just going to clean your teeth. We will take a look at your overall health and oral health, and make recommendations based on what we see during your exam and cleaning.

When we recommend treatments, we do so with not just a single tooth or cosmetic issue in mind. Instead, we will consider how to improve your appearance and health simultaneously.

Along with this comprehensive approach, we offer dental technology that allows for:

  • Improved accuracy for diagnoses
  • Better patient communication
  • Comfortable radiographic imaging with lowered radiation exposure
  • Digital impressions instead of physical impressions
  • Treatment planning for best results and options to fit your needs
  • Improved efficiency, with less time spent at the office

What Is General Dentistry?

General dentistry focuses on preventive care, routine cleanings, and managing small oral concerns, such as cavities or gum irritation. Most dentists will offer this service along with their specializations, such as dental implants or cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Chu is our general dentist and sees patients around every 6 months for their routine oral exams and cleanings.

General Dentistry and Your Smile’s Appearance

Did you know general dentistry can help you maintain or even improve how your smile appears too? While the focus for general dentistry is oral health, cleanings and exams can:

  • Preserve cosmetic work
  • Brighten dull teeth
  • Prevent or treat minor stains
  • Address chipping or small cracks

General Dentistry for Your Preventive Care

General dentistry forms the foundation of lifelong oral health. By focusing on prevention, our team can help you avoid the discomfort and expense of more complex dental problems.

Preventive care is powerful because it allows us to identify concerns early and protect your natural teeth for years to come. At Precision Dental Group, our advanced technology gives us a detailed view of your oral health so we can plan your care with precision.

Our general dentistry allows us to:

Catch Problems Early

Small cavities or gum issues are easier to treat before they progress.

Protect Your Whole Health

Oral health is closely linked to systemic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.

Preserve Natural Teeth

Early intervention helps maintain your natural teeth rather than relying on restorative solutions later.

Save Time and Cost

Preventive treatments are simpler, faster, and less costly than complex procedures.

Support Long-Term Confidence

A healthy, well-maintained smile helps you look and feel your best.

Preventive care is the cornerstone of dentistry because it protects both your oral health and your overall well-being. By prioritizing routine checkups and cleanings, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing your smile is protected.

Regular Cleanings

Professional cleanings remove tartar and staining that regular brushing and flossing can’t get rid of. Our team will use small ultrasonic instruments that vibrate to loosen and rinse off bacterial plaque and calculus, followed by polishing with a dental paste.

We recommend that all patients receive two dental cleanings each year. If you have a history of gum disease, you may need additional periodontal maintenance cleanings.

Deep Cleanings

A deep cleaning (aka periodontal scaling and root planing) is the first step to treat gum disease (periodontal disease). Typically, we give local anesthesia to ensure a comfortable experience. Special techniques and instruments will be used to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria located below the gumline.

After treatment, patients should return for a consultation with our periodontist to evaluate proper healing. Along with your deep cleaning, we may recommend modifications to your at-home care to help treat your periodontal disease.

Early and accurate diagnosis will help prevent and treat dental disease successfully.
Dental exams involve clinical evaluation and radiographic assessment of the oral cavity. You will be screened for tooth and gum disease as well as oral cancer and other issues that can affect the mouth. X-rays help us detect hidden cavities, bone loss, and other possible infections. If needed, intraoral pictures, digital scanning, or a 3D CBCT scan may be recommended.

Fillings, aka dental restorations, repair tooth defects caused by cavities or fractures using a tooth-colored composite resin material.

To receive a filling, local anesthesia may be administered for patient comfort. Our doctor will clean out the bacterial-infected portion of the tooth and replace that with a tooth-colored material. We use a biomimetic filling material that promotes health around the cavity, preventing future caries.

Patients can eat or drink normally after treatment has been completed and the numbing has worn off.

Dental bonding is used for cavities, but it is also used to repair small chips or cracks. If you have damaged your teeth, dental bonding can repair those issues in a single short appointment. Repairing cracks and chips can prevent infection in your teeth and further damage down the line.

Teeth extraction may be needed to remove badly damaged teeth, infection, or to create space for braces.

After numbing the mouth, the tooth will be loosened and removed. You will feel some slight pressure during this process. The socket is thoroughly cleaned out. Stitches may be added to help with wound closure and healing.

Since a tooth extraction leaves the socket empty, bone regeneration may be recommended. See here for proper post-extraction care.

Each part of your experience at our dental office demonstrates our devotion to a high-quality dental experience for our patients. We embrace dental technology that helps you feel calmer and get thorough care, from easy cleanings to quick diagnosis.

A typical general dentistry visit often includes these steps:

What to Expect from a General Dentistry Visit at Precision Dental Group

1

Review of Your Health History

Your visit begins with a review of your medical and dental history, along with any changes since your last appointment. This helps the team understand factors that may affect your oral health, such as medications, health conditions, or new concerns.

2

Comprehensive Oral Evaluation

The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw to look for signs of decay, gum inflammation, wear, or other changes. This evaluation focuses on both current concerns and early signs of issues that may develop over time.

3

Professional Dental Cleaning

A dental hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar buildup that cannot be addressed with brushing and flossing alone. Your teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and leave your smile feeling smooth and refreshed.

4

Digital Imaging and Diagnostics (If Needed)

Digital X-rays or other imaging may be taken to evaluate areas that aren’t visible during a visual exam. These tools help identify concerns such as cavities between teeth, bone changes, or early signs of infection. We typically take comprehensive X-rays once a year.

5

Personalized Recommendations

After your exam, one of our dentists will discuss their findings and provide personalized recommendations. These may include preventive strategies, at-home care tips, or treatment options designed to support both your oral health and smile appearance.

6

Planning Your Next Steps

Before you leave, our team helps plan future visits, whether that’s scheduling your next routine appointment or discussing timing for any recommended care.

Why Choose Our Office?

Precision Dental Group offers comprehensive dentistry, so you can receive all the care you need under one roof, no matter the age range of your family members. Our comprehensive approach also means that we look at how your smile and teeth are working with other parts of your body, such as your gums and jaw. We understand that your oral health affects your general wellness.

We also emphasize preventive care, so small issues never become big issues. Part of our preventive care is working to treat the root cause of oral issues, whether that be genetics or poor health habits. Together, we can prevent oral health issues from happening or recurring.

Our Advanced Dental Technology

We utilize technology that offers precise results and increased comfort. Some of our dental technology for general dentistry includes:

Digital radiographs provide clear, detailed images while using significantly less radiation than traditional X-rays. This allows for safer imaging and earlier detection of cavities, bone changes, and other concerns that may not be visible during a visual exam.

Panoramic X-rays capture a broad view of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures in a single image. This helps evaluate bite alignment, jaw health, and overall oral development as part of comprehensive general care.

Cone beam CT imaging offers detailed 3D views of teeth and bone structure when more information is needed. This technology supports accurate diagnosis and treatment planning beyond what standard X-rays can show.

The TRIOS scanner captures precise digital impressions of the teeth and gums without traditional impression trays. This improves comfort and accuracy while supporting diagnostics, monitoring changes over time, and treatment planning.

AI tools help enhance diagnostic accuracy by analyzing dental images and supporting the early identification of cavities and other concerns, allowing for more proactive and preventive care.

Modern curing lights ensure dental materials are set thoroughly and evenly, supporting long-lasting results and efficient appointments.

Our composite materials for fillings and for dental bonding work with your teeth to heal and restore the area. It is hypoallergenic and matches your tooth color.

Home Care

Proper oral hygiene at home is key to maintaining oral health. Here are some of our home-care tips guided by the American Dental Association (ADA) recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss between teeth nightly.
  • Avoid using toothpastes with heavy abrasive powders; they may accelerate toothbrush-related gum recession and wear away at exposed roots.
  • Avoid mouth rinses that contain alcohol and are acidic in pH; they can damage your enamel with time.
  • If you notice bleeding or irritation, schedule an appointment sooner rather than later, as it can be an indication of gum disease.

Oral hygiene practice needs to be tailored to individual needs. Speak to our team and see how we can help you find the best way to take care of your dental health at home.

General Dentistry FAQs

You’re not alone—and it’s never too late to restart care. A general dentistry visit is designed to meet you where you are, focusing on your current oral health and creating a plan that fits your needs without judgment.

Dental sedation can make routine visits more comfortable if you experience dental anxiety, have a sensitive gag reflex, or feel tense during appointments. Sedation helps you stay calm and relaxed, allowing your dentist to work efficiently while you remain comfortable throughout your visit. For some patients, it can also make longer or more involved appointments feel shorter and easier to manage.

Most patients benefit from visiting the dentist every 6 months to maintain healthy teeth and gums. However, some individuals may need more frequent visits based on their oral health history, gum health, or medical conditions. Your dentist can recommend a schedule that best supports your long-term oral health.

Preventing gum disease starts with consistent daily care and routine professional visits. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and keeping up with regular dental cleanings help remove plaque before it hardens and irritates the gums. Addressing early signs such as redness, tenderness, or bleeding gums promptly can help prevent more advanced periodontal issues.

Brushing cleans the surfaces of your teeth, but flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth and along the gumline—areas your toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing daily helps reduce the risk of cavities between teeth, gum inflammation, and bad breath, supporting healthier gums overall.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make gums more sensitive and prone to inflammation. Maintaining thorough brushing and flossing habits is essential. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and keeping up with recommended dental visits can help protect both your oral health and your comfort throughout pregnancy.
