What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are surgical treatments to replace missing teeth by placing a titanium “root” into bone and then attaching a crown or other dental restoration to the implant. The implant securely anchors to your jaw, so your implant will act and feel just like a natural tooth.

Dental implants can last up to a lifetime with proper hygiene practice and routine dental care.

Can You Benefit from a Dental Implant?

The main goal of a dental implant is to fully replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth with a permanent solution. If you are missing teeth, implants might be the right choice for you.

Missing teeth affects more than just the appearance of your smile. Over time, a gap can lead to shifting teeth, changes in your bite, difficulty chewing, and even a gradual loss of jawbone density. When a tooth root is no longer present, the jawbone beneath it is no longer stimulated, which can cause the bone to weaken and shrink. This bone loss may impact your facial structure and make future restorative treatments more complex.

Dental implants address these concerns at their source. By replacing both the visible tooth and the missing root, implants help restore stability to your smile while supporting the health of your jawbone.

If you have noticed facial sagging or are struggling with loose or ill-fitting dentures, implants can help with that as well.

Our Candidacy Recommendations

You may be a good candidate for dental implants if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Missing One or More Teeth: Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or support full-arch restorations without relying on neighboring teeth for support.
  • Healthy Gums: Stable gum health is essential for implant success. Any signs of gum disease must be addressed before implant placement.
  • Adequate Jawbone Density: A strong bone foundation is needed to support implants. If bone loss is present, bone regeneration may help you qualify.
  • Good Overall Health: Certain medical conditions can affect healing. We carefully review your health history to ensure implants are a safe option.
  • Commitment to Oral Hygiene: Daily brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits help protect your investment and long-term implant success.
  • Desire for a Long-Term Solution: Implants are designed to be a durable, permanent replacement that supports both function and facial structure.

Even if you are not immediately a candidate for dental implants, we offer bone grafts and health improvement plans to help you prepare for dental implants or other restorative dentistry. If you think a dental implant will help your smile, reach out to our office. We offer comprehensive consultations to address your smile and overall health.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the most reliable way to replace missing teeth, restoring both function and confidence in your smile. Unlike removable options, implants integrate directly with the jawbone, creating a secure foundation that looks and feels natural.

Restore Full Function

Implants allow you to chew, speak, and smile without worry of the slipping or shifting of ill-fitting removable dentures.

Protect Jawbone Health

By stimulating the bone like a natural tooth root, implants prevent bone loss and preserve facial structure.

Long-lasting Solution

With proper care, implants can last decades, often a lifetime.

Natural-Looking Aesthetics

Each restoration is designed to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth for a smile that feels authentic.

Improved Confidence

A stable, attractive smile enhances self-esteem and supports overall quality of life.

Preserve Healthy Teeth

Tooth loss can cause shifting of your smile or excessive wear on surrounding teeth. Implants can help prevent those complications.

Our office uses advanced imaging, 3D technology, and state-of-the-art guided surgery implant systems to ensure your treatment is precise and comfortable. By combining expertise with high-tech digital planning, we provide implant solutions that are designed for long-term wear, comfort, and appearance.

Receiving Dental Implants

The dental implant process in its entirety takes around 3–6 months. However, you won’t need to be without a tooth throughout this process. We craft temporary single-tooth dentures or temporaries that are custom-made to your smile. That way, you can receive implants while enjoying the function of your smile.

Our process involves these steps:

A comprehensive exam is needed prior to dental implant therapy. This usually includes a review of the patient’s medical history, dental health status, and an analysis of your bone volume with our 3D CBCT imaging technology.

During the consultation, we will determine as a team how many implants you need and what kind of restorations will work best for your oral health and lifestyle. Dental implants can be used to support a single crown, a dental bridge, or an entire denture. We use All-on-X implants to craft full-arch restorations.

Bone grafts can help you receive implants even if your bone volume has diminished over the years. Along with bone grafts, we also offer sinus lifts.

The implant or implants are placed according to our precise surgical guide. We use advanced imaging technology to plan where your implants will be placed digitally and 3D print a surgical guide to be used at the time of surgery. This custom placement assists your body in integrating your implant, improving outcomes, and promoting quicker recovery.

We offer premier quality dental implants to give you the best success rates and longevity. Many of our implants can be placed even if you have lower bone density.

The placement is completed under local anesthesia and requires a day or two of recovery. We will give you recovery instructions and long-term care instructions before and after your treatment.

Once the dental implant is placed, 3–6 months of healing are needed before a dental restoration is placed. During that time, you will have a temporary, yet comfortable, prosthetic. This allows you to go about your life normally while your dental implant integrates.

A custom restoration will be created for your smile. Once your implant is secure, we will take digital impressions to craft the necessary restorations. Our office offers digital impressions for your comfort, so you don’t have to experience any messiness or discomfort from physical impressions.

Once we have received your new restoration, whether it be a full arch of teeth or a single crown, we will connect it to your implant, so it can act as your new tooth.

Implant Restoration Options at Precision Dental Group

A dental implant is the part of your tooth restoration that will go into your jawbone and sit under your gums. The abutment connects the implant to the dental restoration, which will act like your visible tooth, or tooth crown. We offer a variety of implant restoration options, ranging from one that can fill just a gap left by a single missing tooth to implant-supported dentures that can restore an entire arch.

  • Single Dental Crown: An implant-supported crown replaces one missing tooth by attaching a custom-made crown to a single dental implant. This option is ideal when a patient is missing one tooth but has healthy neighboring teeth. A single crown restores your smile without relying on adjacent teeth for stability.
  • Dental Bridge: An implant-supported bridge replaces multiple missing teeth in a row using two or more implants as anchors. Instead of placing an implant for every missing tooth, implants support a connected set of crowns. This option is often recommended when several teeth are missing in the same area, and the patient wants a fixed, non-removable solution.
  • Partial Dentures: Implant-supported partial dentures are used when a patient is missing multiple teeth but still has some healthy natural teeth remaining. Implants help secure the partial denture, improving stability compared to traditional removable partials. This option is appropriate for patients who want improved comfort and function without replacing every missing tooth individually.
  • Overdentures: Overdentures are removable dentures that attach securely to dental implants. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums, overdentures snap onto implants for improved stability and comfort. This option is commonly recommended for patients missing an entire arch of teeth who want better function and confidence while still having a removable prosthetic.
  • All-on-X and Fixed Dentures: All-on-X and fixed implant dentures replace an entire upper or lower arch using a customized number of implants, typically 4–6, to support a full set of teeth. These restorations are permanently attached and do not need to be removed. This option is ideal for patients with extensive tooth loss who want a long-term, fixed solution that closely mimics natural teeth in function, appearance, and feel.

Trust Our Periodontist for Implant Placement

Dr. Wong is our office’s periodontist. She has further training than a general dentist might, offering certifications in periodontal health and in oral surgery. This uniquely qualifies her to help plan and place your implants. Her more experienced hand will place implants with precision, boosting their longevity and success rates. Along with that, our non-invasive techniques can shorten your recovery time, leaving you with a full smile sooner.

Her training as a periodontist also allows her to offer bone grafts and sinus lifts to help you prepare for implants. If you are interested in replacing your teeth but your smile isn’t quite ready to support dental implants, we can help, all in our Hillsborough, NJ, office.

Receiving an implant is a long process, which can be made worse if you have to manage several different dental offices and surgeons. Thankfully, we offer care all in one place. We plan, place, and restore your implant. This continuity of care:

  • Increases the quality of the care you get
  • Saves you time and travel expenses
  • Helps you develop a positive relationship with your dentist
  • Means you have a personalized implant and restoration

Our advanced technology provides increased comfort with predictable results. By investing in advanced technology, we are investing in a better visit and experience for you.

We offer several different kinds of implants, so we can personalize the implant to where it is going in your jawbone and what kind of restoration it will support. In some cases, this allows us to place even if there is low bone density. It also increases the likelihood of a successful implant placement that lasts for years.

To place implants, we use our Kavo handpiece for imaging, and then create implant guides that help us place your implant with precision during your implant placement procedure. Our imaging is detailed and accurate, allowing us to plan your implants and discuss our approach with you. Our scans will offer a visual aid during our patient consultations.

Dental Implant Frequently Asked Questions

Dental implants are cared for much like natural teeth. Daily brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits are essential for protecting the health of the gums and bone surrounding the implant. While implants cannot develop cavities, the supporting gum tissue can become inflamed if plaque and bacteria are not properly removed. Regular professional cleanings allow our team to monitor your implant and ensure it remains stable, comfortable, and functioning as intended.

Yes, dental implants can be used to replace traditional dentures in many cases. Implants can support removable overdentures or fixed restorations such as All-on-X, providing improved stability and comfort. Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums, implant-supported options anchor to the jawbone, helping prevent slipping and reducing bone loss over time. During a consultation, we can help determine which implant-supported option best fits your needs and goals.

Whether a sinus lift or bone graft is needed depends on the amount and quality of bone in your jaw. Using advanced imaging, our team evaluates bone density and anatomical structures to determine if additional support is necessary. These procedures are recommended when there is not enough bone to securely place an implant and are performed to improve safety, stability, and long-term success. Not every patient requires additional procedures, but when they are recommended, they are done to protect your outcome.

Yes, dental implants are often an important part of full-mouth rehabilitation. They can be used alongside crowns, bridges, or dentures to restore function, balance, and aesthetics across the entire smile. Because implants replace missing tooth roots, they help support bite alignment and jaw health, making them a reliable foundation for comprehensive restorative care. Our team carefully plans each phase of treatment to ensure all components work together for long-term comfort and function.
