An oral biopsy is a quick procedure where a small tissue sample is collected from your mouth and sent to a lab for evaluation. It’s typically recommended after a dentist notices a suspicious sore, patch, or growth during an exam, and it’s the most reliable way to determine whether tissue is healthy, precancerous, or cancerous.

Do I Need an Oral Biopsy?

An oral biopsy is recommended when you have signs of oral cancer or a concerning growth or lesion in your oral cavity. These signs are often caught by a general dentist during exams, and then you will be referred for an oral biopsy.

If you have signs of oral cancer, we may recommend an oral biopsy. Some signs of concerning tissue include:

  • A sore that hasn’t healed in two weeks or more
  • White or red patches inside the mouth
  • A lump, thickened area, or rough patch of tissue
  • Unexplained swelling in the mouth, gums, or jaw
  • A growth or lesion that’s changing or growing
  • Areas of tissue that appear hardened or firm
  • Changes in the texture of oral tissues

What to Expect

All oral biopsies at Precision Dental Group are completed in a single visit using our Waterlase laser (Er,Cr:YSGG laser technology) for minimal discomfort and faster healing. We use local numbing as needed, and no sutures are needed most of the time. The tissue sample is sent to an oral pathologist for evaluation, and we’ll contact you to schedule a follow-up visit to review your results. If further care is needed, we’ll connect you with the right specialist.
